Middelburg has become a real university city, thanks to the Roosevelt Academy which came here in 2004. There are alternatives too, for those who do not want to dive into the student life full time. The ROC (regional training centre) and the Open University also provide Dutch language training courses.
The Roosevelt Academy is in the historic former Town Hall of Middelburg. It is a university college, where bachelor courses can be followed in Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences and Sciences. The university is internationally oriented, so lectures are given in English. Its small-scale approach (a maximum of 600 students) gives the university an intimate character. Students are given intensive tuition and the work ethic at the Roosevelt Academy borders on the fanatical. This leads to top-class results.
Students consider the varied subjects on offer at the Roosevelt Academy to be one of the major pluses of their education. Numerous combinations are possible and those who really put their shoulders to the wheel are even able to opt for two masters degrees. A programme of lessons from the Roosevelt Academy is genuinely a personalised teaching programme.
Students at the Roosevelt Academy are not only pampered when it comes to the subjects on offer. They also get the comfortable living quarters they need. Student accommodation is on the university campus. You will find them spread across a variety of pleasant locations in the city centre, all within walking or cycling distance of the university.

Widely differing courses can be taken at the Zeeuwse Volksuniversiteit, for example on languages, computers or on philosophy. Creative courses and lectures are given too. The majority of the courses are in Dutch. However, there is a Dutch course for non-Dutch speakers, where people who do not know the language can learn the rudiments of Dutch.

Various courses are given at the Regionaal Opleidingen Centrum Zeeland, (Zeeland Regional Training Centre), including maritime technology, economics, catering, tourism and nutrition, healthcare, and ICT & electronics. These courses are entirely given in Dutch, but those who do not speak Dutch may also go to the ROC. The Dutch for Foreigners course will teach you to express yourself in Dutch.
