Since Middelburg was awarded its town charter in 1217 it has been the provincial capital and administrative centre of Zeeland. Middelburg is home to many government offices and organisations in the field of business and commercial services. In addition to the Provincial Government, the Department of Waterways and Public Works (Zeeland), the Zeeland Island Water Board, the district court and many banks, estate agents and administrative offices are also located in Middelburg.
Trade and industry are also well represented. For example several multinationals, including Eastman Chemical, Varian Chrompack and Scheldebouw have branches here.
The construction of the Western Scheldt Tunnel has now made access to Middelburg easy from Zeeland Flanders, the Belgian ports and Northern France. The motorway A58 provides a link to and from North-Brabant and Antwerp and Rotterdam are just a drive away along the motorway A4. The planned Construction of the trunkraod N57 will provide a direct link to the port of Rotterdam.
Middelburg is easily accessible by public transport. It is served by several bus lines and the railway station is centrally located. Zeeland Airport lies within the boundaries of Middelburg and Zeeland Seaports are just a stone’s throw away.
The town council has an ongoing programme to develop new business parks in order to maintain good levels of commerce and industry. Examples include the Station Area, the Veldzigt office park and the Mortiere business park. In addition the existing Arnestein business park is being upgraded.
